I started interning at GMCVB yesterday, which was on a Wednesday (2/05), and also worked this afternoon for a couple hours. The first day Cindy introduced me to some of the workers there and showed me the storage room where they keep all their brochures. This storage room reminded me of the one this summer at Seneca where I worked, except GMCVB's is much more spacious and nicer (i.e. it's carpeted, wow). I was set to work at the sport's director's computer but we ran into a major problem. The mouse was missing. So I was moved to another desk. My first day's task was to work on their newly renovated "brand-spankin' new" website by editing their main four sections: eat, stay, play, and shop. I came up with a a page and half of editing corrections (mainly punctuation errors). I finished at the end of my two-hour shift.
Today I was scheduled to work for two hours in the afternoon, but as I remembered from one of the readings about the proper attire (and this is not jeans)I encountered a problem. I do own many pairs of dress pants, but they are all at home which is far far away. After reading the article, I was pretty sure I was scared to show up in jeans. So, needless to say I had to go shopping before work. I was assigned the task of adding new businesses to their websites under the four previous mentioned sections. Since the website is really new, there are quite a few businesses to add to the site. This task will take some time, but I think it will be rather fun. I finished adding the hotels section and started working on the shopping ones. There are a lot of new businesses and attractions, especially since the greater Morgantown area consists of not just Mon. county but the Fairmont area as well. I'm looking forward to continuing to work on this project.

Kellllen,
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm glad to hear it's nicer there than Seneka lol. Other than the mouseless desk things sound pretty good. I'm working on the WVU Press website right now, so I know how it is to have a task in front of you that will take quite some time involving a website. It's ok, I guess. It's fine to wear jeans and stuff at the Press, so thats a plus. I think making myself comfortable in the environment I work in helps me work well. So, the fact that this place reminds you of your former work might be beneficial.
Hey :) It's a shame you had to go out and buy new clothes, that your dress clothes were at home...I get to wear jeans here at the Business Incubator :-( But anyway, sounds good :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, too, that you found yourself in a situation where you needed to buy new pants for your internship. That said, I think there certainly is a different atmosphere at the Visitors' Bureau than there is at the WVU Press or WVU Business Incubator (at least the cubicle area where the interns work); at the Visitors' Bureau there's certainly a more likely chance that local "customers" will show up there (to pick up materials, to ask questions, etc.), so you need to present a "professional" image. Indeed, an important learning aspect of a PWE internship is learning how to integrate oneself into a workplace culture. I'm glad, then, that you were able to draw on your course readings here in thinking about "workplace protocol."
